Children are instructed in the faith by generous volunteer catechists and assistants. Some of the catechists have served in this ministry for ten years or more, and the assistants are willing helpers who come first to gain some experience in the classroom.  Many eventually lead a class as catechist.

Our role as PREP catechists is to support parents as the primary educators of their children in the faith.  Parents ‘form’ and PREP catechists ‘inform’.  We merely sow the seeds which will blossom in the home environment.  To assist us in our role, many workshops and training sessions are offered throughout the year by the Archdiocesan Office of Religious Education.  As well as preparing children for the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Communion in Grades 1 & 2 and Confirmation in Grades 6 & 7, we cover material on scripture, the commandments, sacraments, Our Lady and the saints, the Creed, liturgy, and prayer, throughout your child's education in Grades 1 through 7.

Catechists are truly people of faith who commit themselves to at least one full year of ministry. They have a love for children, are sensitive to the needs of each individual, and have an abundance of patience!  To teach the faith to children is a very challenging yet rewarding ministry.  Many catechists have said that they came to teach, but learned much along the way! They have become more aware of God’s presence in their lives, and have been enriched by sharing their faith with the children.

..

The PREP team includes a long list of people committed to improving our parish community over the long term by engaging the minds and hearts of our youngest members.  Catechists, hall monitors, office staff, and special events support people are all putting to action their fervent belief in the importance of nurturing the faith of our children in communion with our parish families.  If this calling speaks to your heart, or you have a child 16 years or older who wishes to become involved in parish activities, we have a variety of volunteer positions with weekly, monthly, or once-a-year commitments.

Please contact the PREP Office at 604-596-4004 for details.
